A warehouse doesn't keep office hours. Trucks arrive overnight, pickers work second and third shift, and the loads that have to be in Denver by Monday morning get staged on Saturday. But at most small and mid-sized logistics operations, the IT support behind all of it runs Monday through Friday, nine to five. When the WMS locks up at 2 a.m. or the label printers stop talking to the network on a Sunday, the operation waits, and the freight waits with it.
That mismatch between when the business runs and when its systems are supported is one of the most expensive problems in the industry, and attackers have noticed it too.
The Numbers Behind the Off-Hours Problem
ITIC's 2024 Hourly Cost of Downtime survey found that over 90% of mid-size and large enterprises put the cost of a single hour of downtime at $300,000 or more, and while a regional 3PL runs well below that figure, warehouse and distribution operations commonly estimate their own downtime in the tens of thousands of dollars per hour once idle labor, detention, and missed delivery windows are counted. Detention alone accumulates fast: industry rates for driver detention typically run $50 to $100 per hour per truck, and the American Transportation Research Institute has documented that the average detention rate charged to shippers doesn't cover a carrier's average hourly operating cost. A dock full of trucks that can't load because the system is down is a bill growing in real time.
Semperis's 2025 Ransomware Holiday Risk Report found that 52% of ransomware attacks occurred on weekends or holidays, and that 78% of companies cut their security staffing by half or more during exactly those windows. CISA and the FBI have warned about this pattern since 2021, when an advisory documented major ransomware attacks deliberately launched over Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July weekends. Attackers pick those hours because they know nobody is watching, and a logistics operation is the worst possible victim: its busiest hours and its least-defended hours are the same hours.
What an Off-Hours Failure Actually Costs
A server reboots and a service doesn't come back. A switch dies and half the RF scanners lose connection. A software update applied Friday evening breaks the interface between the WMS and the shipping system. On a weekday morning, any of these is an annoyance. At 2 a.m. Saturday, it's an outage with no one to call.
Pickers move to paper, which means every transaction has to be re-keyed later and inventory accuracy degrades for days afterward. Loads miss their departure windows, which cascades into missed delivery appointments, rescheduling fees, and detention on both ends. Customers with real-time visibility expectations watch their tracking go dark and start calling. And if the cause turns out to be an attack rather than a failure, the hours between compromise and discovery are the hours the attacker uses to spread, which is why weekend incidents so often become full-network events by Monday.

Continuous monitoring catches most failures before they become outages: the server running out of disk space, the failing drive, the service that stopped responding. It also catches the security signals that matter most in the off hours, the login from an unfamiliar location, the process encrypting files at 1 a.m., and turns them into an immediate response instead of a Monday discovery. Remote remediation resolves most issues without anyone driving to the facility, and defined escalation paths mean that when hands are needed on site, that call happens at 3 a.m. rather than after the weekend.
